It was somewhat of a turnoff for the band’s longtime listeners who fell in love with their 80s material but it gained a new audience surprised at the change of image and sound but what the general public does not know is this was the hardest album to make as there were internal problems within the band: Martin L Gore’s alcoholism, Andrew Fletcher’s battle with depression and Dave Gahan’s drug and alcohol addiction that nearly killed him in 1996 making Alan Wilder quit the band after the Summer tour. To those who are new to Depeche Mode’s back catalog of songs of sex, religion, pain and suffering in various tempos (no pun intended), do not be surprised if you start questioning everything you’ve known in regards to religion with their music, we all go through a different journey spiritually which is the point of revisiting ‘Songs of Faith and Devotion’, the band’s eighth studio album known for its transition from electronic popstars (Violator, 1990) to an alternative rock sound as grunge music was rising on the charts at the time.
